5th ECO Ministerial Meeting on EnvironmentECO-IEST: The 5th ECO Ministerial Meeting on Environment will be held on 17 December 2014 in Istanbul, Republic of Turkey. The Ministerial Meeting will be preceded by two-day Senior Officials Meeting on 15-16 December 2014.

According to the ECO Secretariat Ministerial Meeting will focus, among others, on the state of play of ECO environmental agenda; national environmental policies and efforts to enhance regional cooperation and synergy; the emerging regional and environmental challenges; and strengthening ECO cooperation with relevant international organizations.

Environment is among the priority areas of cooperation within ECO. Currently there are range of environment‐related activities and frameworks within the Organization. "ECO Plan of Action on Environmental Cooperation and Global Warming (2011‐2015)" constitutes the main cooperation framework at the moment which requires active involvement of all stakeholders from within and outside the Region.

Given the cross‐cutting nature and global impact of environmental activities at the national and regional levels, ECO has been following the trending global environmental processes, including in the context of multilateral environmental conventions as well as all-inclusive goals of the RIO+20 outcome document. Given its three decades of experience and its vast potential contribution to the overall environmental agenda of the international community, ECO has been emerging as a credible regional partner for major international environmental actors.

Furthermore, recently ECO through facilitation of policy dialogue between relevant stakeholders is striving to reinvigorate mutually beneficial ECO-UNEP collaboration. In this regard the "ECO Consultative Ministerial Meeting on Environment” was held on 25 June 2014 in Nairobi, Kenya on the sidelines of the "United Nations Environment Assembly” (UNEA). The Meeting was attended by the Ministers/High Level Officials from the ECO Member States. Mr. Achim Steiner, Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) also attended the Meeting.

The ECO Ministerial Meeting in Istanbul will also review the implementation of the decisions taken at Nairobi meeting.

From ECO-IEST Dr. Asghar Mohammadi Fazel, President and Dr. Sasan Rabieh, Coordinator of the Institute will participate in the Meeting.
