ECO-IEST: Talking to Iranian News Agency (IRNA) Pakistan foreign ministry spokesperson says Iran is a long standing friend of Pakistan and his country attaches great importance to its ties with the Islamic Republic.

Nafees Zakaria termed meeting between Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly session in New York as 'very significant', adding that such meetings provide an opportunity to the two friendly countries to review their relationship.

"Such meetings are highly significant and show that how much both countries attach importance to bilateral ties,” he noted.

He added that whenever leaders of the two countries meet it gives an opportunity to both countries to review their relationship.

The official went on to say that sideline meetings during the UN General Assembly session between the leaders of different countries are the best forum to sort out things.

He said that Iran is a neighboring country and we share many things with each other. "Iran is a long standing friend and we have converging interests on many issues,” said Nafees Zakaria.

The spokesperson opined that recently foreign minister of Pakistan Khawaja Asif travelled to Iran to discuss regional developments and he was received there at the highest level which shows the nature of relations Pakistan has with Iran.

The meeting between President Hassan Rouhani and Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi is a major step to improve bilateral ties.

President Rouhani during the meeting said that Iran pays great value to its ties with Pakistan and is ready to fulfill the energy needs of Pakistan.
